The Independent – a British national morning newspaper published in London by Independent Print Limited It is nicknamed the Indy, while the Sunday edition, The Independent on Sunday, is the Sindy. Launched in 1986, it is one of the youngest UK national daily newspapers. The daily edition was named National Newspaper of the Year at the 2004 British Press Awards. In July 2011 it had an average daily circulation of 182,881, and was the only national daily newspaper in Britain to have increased its circulation over the previous 12 months. During the same period the Sunday edition had a slightly lower circulation, at 167,247.

The Mainichi Shimbun ("Daily News") is one of the major newspapers in Japan, published by The Mainichi Newspapers Co., Ltd.

The history of the Mainichi Shimbun begins with founding of two papers during the Meiji period. The Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun was founded first, in 1872. The Mainichi claims that it is the oldest existing Japanese daily newspaper with its 136-year-long history. The Osaka Mainichi Shimbun was founded four years later, in 1876. The two papers merged in 1911, and were placed under a Mainichi Shimbun masthead in 1943.

The Mainichi has 3,200 employees working in 364 offices in Japan and 26 bureaus overseas. It is one of Japan's three largest newspapers in terms of circulation and number of employees, and has 79 associated companies, including Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS), Mainichi Broadcasting System (MBS) and the Sports Nippon Newspaper.

Mainichi RT is a new type of publication produced by the Mainichi Newspapers Co. in Japan. It incorporates the social networking site Twitter. Articles read on Mainichi.jp within the past 24 hours (or the past 48 hours following a newspaper holiday) are picked up and presented together with Tweets received through the mainichiRT Twitter site in a newspaper published six times a week. The publication brings Twitter's real-time communication into a new newspaper and Web format, and allows readers to share their feelings with many other people and read about what is happening "now."

Readers decide the value of news stories

Mainichi RT is a form of media produced together with users. The pages of Mainichi RT are edited to match the most-read articles on Mainichi.jp.
